Is a deck or patio better for your Home?

Like a lot of people, 2019 and 2020, made us realize the importance of creating havens in our homes.

We wanted to make use of our backyard. We fenced it in first to create much needed privacy but it didn't give us vacation vibes like we hoped. It set us on a journey to decide between a deck off of our 2nd floor sunroom or a patio off of the walk out basement. Ultimately, we opted for a patio because our view from the 2nd floor would not provide the privacy we wanted from the neighbors behind us.

Deciding between a deck and a patio can be a difficult choice, as both have their own unique benefits and drawbacks.

Here are some factors to consider when deciding between a deck and a patio:

• Cost: In general, a patio is typically less expensive to build than a deck. This is because a patio is built directly on the ground and does not require the additional support and foundation work that a deck does. However, the materials you choose for your patio or deck can also affect the overall cost.

• Maintenance: Both decks and patios require some maintenance, but the type and amount of maintenance can vary. A wood deck will need to be sealed and stained regularly to protect it from the elements, while a concrete patio may only need to be sealed every few years.

• Durability: Both decks and patios can be durable options, but the materials you choose will affect their lifespan. A concrete patio can last for decades with minimal maintenance, while a wood deck may need to be replaced after a few years if it is not properly cared for.

• Style: The style of your home and your personal preferences will also play a role in your decision. A deck may be a better fit for a home with a more modern or contemporary style, while a patio may be more suitable for a traditional or rustic home.

Ultimately, the choice between a deck and a patio will depend on your budget, maintenance preferences, and style preferences.

It is a good idea to consider all of these factors before making a decision.
